Communicating during COVID-19

We are all going through difficult times during this period of quarantine and social distancing, and for some, communication with the use of electronic means is challenging. The importance of communication by electronic means such as video conferences and emails is vital during these times. Nowadays, the safest and most efficient way of communication is by electronic means since many offices are working remotely, while meetings in person are limited to matters of the utmost urgency.

One of the advantages of electronic communication is that information and documentation arrives instantly, you do not have to take half day or a day off work to present documents in person, and more importantly, you do not expose yourself to risk by going outside. For example, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), due to the National Emergency of COVID-19, is accepting various documents such as petitions and applications that have an original signature electronically reproduced. This means that an applicant can scan a document and send it by fax, email and other similar means. Another example is representation before the Immigration Courts which are allowing presentations by telephone or video. This is not new, but it is now a preferred practice.

Some of the most used electronic methods of communication are emails, video applications for meetings such as Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp, Google Meet/Drive, FaceTime and many others. Now is the time to give yourself the opportunity to use these applications and if you are inexperienced, do not worry as they are easy to learn and it is likely that you already have someone in your household that may be able to use several of them. If not, there are a plethora of online video tutorials on services like YouTube that will bring you up to speed
